Baggage allowance on Brussels Airlines


There are standard size limits for transportation (no more than 158 cm in the sum of three dimensions for baggage or 115 cm for hand luggage). Food or other perishable organic objects are not allowed on Brussels Airlines flights.

As on other Lufthansa flights, there are strict restrictions on the carriage of all types of weapons. Only unloaded sporting weapons with the safety on are allowed on board. It is not allowed to take more than 1 kg of cartridges or arrows. Each unit must be described, a passport and hunting license must be attached. Weapons are registered separately.

It is allowed to transport one set of sports equipment per passenger. A set is considered to be:

  • a pair of skis and boots, poles;
  • a pair of skates;
  • a set of caving or climbing equipment for one person;
  • skateboard or snowboard;
  • surfboard;
  • a bicycle folded in half. The tires and handlebars must be removed.

Sports equipment is placed in soft pouches labeled with the passenger’s markings. The packaging must be tight enough to protect other customers’ luggage from punctures or cuts.

The following types of cargo are prohibited for transportation:

  • unregistered weapons, except collector’s items;
  • explosives, their components or fuses;
  • pressurized gas cylinders, except inhalers;
  • corrosive, radioactive or chemically unstable substances;
  • flammable components, fuels and lubricants. Devices containing fuel (e.g., lighters) must be stripped of fuel prior to flight;
    liquids larger than 1 liter, alcohol stronger than 60%;
  • lithium batteries above 160 watts, devices with. Less powerful ones are allowed through provided they are turned off and the contacts are covered with soft covers;
  • devices that create a strong magnetic field or electronic interference. Small electronics can be placed only in hand luggage provided that the “flight” mode is switched on at the moment of take-off and landing;
  • poisonous substances, devices containing mercury or strong allergens.

Hand luggage regulations

Rules similar to baggage allowance apply, but with some differences. Prohibited:

  • Weapons or toys that visually resemble them;
  • liquids in containers with a volume of more than 100 ml. Exceptions are baby food sets or medicines prescribed by a doctor (provide a prescription);
  • stabbing-cutting devices, blunt instruments that can be used as cold weapons (e.g. hammers, wrenches);

Permitted:

  • medical devices, syringes with insulin if recommended by a doctor;
  • charging tablets and smartphones from the built-in USB port in the passenger seat. Laptops can be charged only through special outlets accessible to business class passengers or at the front of the ship.

The following items are allowed in hand luggage and will not be included in the free allowance:

  • backpack weighing up to 3 kg;
  • small electronics (laptop, tablet, chargers);
  • umbrella or walking stick, raincoat;
  • suit in a case;
  • outerwear in winter;
  • baby food kits;
  • a handbag, shoulder or waist bag.

Animal transportation rules

Pets weighing up to 32 kg can be transported on Brussels Airlines flights. Larger pets are handled as cargo and sent on a separate flight. Pets up to and including 7 kg are accommodated in the cabin, animals between 7 and 32 kg are checked in as baggage.

Animals are allowed to fly provided they are vaccinated and appear healthy. Unconscious pets, aggressive animals or pregnant females will not be allowed on board.

Brussels Airlines declines responsibility for the life and health of pets with short noses (e.g. Pekingese or Persian cats).

Service dogs are accommodated in the cabin regardless of their size. A muzzle and collar shall be worn, and the pet shall be close to the owner at all times. Other animals shall be placed in carriers with the following requirements:

  • well ventilated. It should not be covered with a dense fabric that prevents air circulation;
  • made of hypoallergenic material;
  • inside there is a bowl with clean water and food familiar to the pet;
  • the dimensions should be such that the pet can stand up or roll over inside;
  • equipped with a metal door with a lock that cannot be opened from the inside.
